Rodents pose a significant economic threat to swine and poultry operations. From consuming and contaminating feed to damaging curtainsand spreading disease, their presence can be costly. Implementing effective rodent control takes time, knowledge, and investment, but it pays off by reducing long-term expenses.

Rodent Control is an Ongoing Process
Rather than a one-time solution, rodent control is a continuous effort. Rodents are persistent pests, and achieving “zero rodents” may not be practical or even possible for a few key reasons:

DID YOU KNOW?

  • A single female house mouse can produce up to 56 offspring in a year.
  • Rodents are constantly drawn to barns and production facilities for food and warmth.
  • Most rodent activity happens at night, meaning they often go unnoticed

Before Your Facility Becomes a Rodent Haven, Ask Yourself:

1. Do You Know Your Rodenticides?

There are two primary types used in swine production:

  • Acute toxicants: Fast-acting poisons that are effective in a short time.
  • Anticoagulants: Slower but deadly by causing internal bleeding.

2. Are You Using the Right Mix?

A combination of acute and anticoagulant rodenticides provides the most effective and economical control. Here’s a tip: rotate brands between seasons (spring and fall) to keep rodents from developing resistance.

3. Are You Controlling Your Costs?

Don’t fall for the misconception that the cheapest rodenticide is the most cost-effective. Consider the long-term results and factors such as potency, ease of use, and the severity of the infestation when selecting a product.

4. Remember the Basics:

  • Know Your Enemy: Understand rodent behavior to outsmart them.
  • Proper Placement: Make sure your bait is where rodents are likely to find it.
  • Use Enough:Ensure you have sufficient bait to handle the problem.
  • Manage Risks: Keep safety in mind, particularly in areas where animals and humans are present.
