More about Renco® Preg-Tone®

The Renco® Preg-Tone® is For Use On Swine, Sheep or Goats. NOT FOR USE ON CATTLE.

The Renco® Preg-Tone® is a fast, safe and accurate ultrasonic pregnancy detector can be used for swine, sheep, alpacas, meat and dairy goats, pygmy goats, llamas, large rabbits, foxes, and many other animals over 8 pounds. It does not need to be seen or held during testing.

It uses ultrasound to detect amniotic fluid present during pregnancy. When this fluid is detected, the instrument produces a loud, continuous tone. If the animal is not pregnant, it produces an intermittent recurring tone. 100% accurate between 30 and 45 days depending on the animal type.

During testing, no lights are used, no buttons are pushed, thus attention is not diverted from the animal. Since it uses only loud, easy to hear tones to indicate both pregnancy and non-pregnancy, it can be clipped on the belt or kept in a pocket.

The rechargeable NiMH battery pack will last for years, and give many hours of testing on one charge. It automatically turns itself off when the battery needs recharging, protecting the user against erroneous readings due to insufficient power. A wall plug charger is supplied. Input Specifications: 100-240 VAC 50/60Hz .2A. includes wall plugs for major countries

All-metal construction guarantees against interference by radio waves in the atmosphere, a major accuracy problem with some ultrasound instruments. It is constructed of heavy gauge aluminum for ruggedness and ease of cleaning, yet the Preg-Tone® is still lightweight and small enough to slip in your pocket.

Features/Advantages:

  • No lights to watch or buttons to push
  • Uses loud, easy-to-hear tones
  • Operates 6-8 hours on full charge
  • Rechargeable NiMH batteries
  • Battery charger included
  • All-metal construction
  • Small enough to fit in a pocket
  • 5' cord
  • Identification of feed-wasting non-producers and low producers at very early stages
  • Confirmation of pregnancy in animals purchased or sold
  • Savings resulting from increase in overall operating efficiency, permitting more efficient use of expensive farrowing installations

Specifications:

  • Operating Temp Range: 0° F to 120° F
  • Operating Time: Approximately 8 hours on a full charge
  • Dimensions: 6" x 2.7" x 2.15"
  • Weight: 15.4 oz.

Swine: Testing may begin as early as 18 days (large litters, 11-12 piglets, will show positive at this stage), and open sows can be diagnosed as early as 30 days. Normal testing time in sows and gilts is 30-73 days.

Sheep: Using the position shown above, pregnancy testing in ewes can begin at 35 days with most diagnoses made by 45 days. Testing can also be done in the normal standing position, providing diagnosis at 60-65 days.

Goats: Testing may begin at 30-40 days on the right side. Put oil on test site. Probe is placed 2 in. (5cm) in front of the rear leg and 1-in (2.5cm) above the teat. When probe is in good contact, the intermittent tone will be heard. Aim probe 45° upwards and forwards i.e. towards the last rib. Scan across the uterus. If pregnant, the tone will turn into a continuous tone. Dairy goats such as the Oberhasli can be tested as early at 20 days.

Alpacas: Testing can begin at 30-40 days. Alpacas and llamas are tested on the left side. If unsuccessful, try the procedure on the right side. Place probe 6-8-in (15-20cm) down from the udder. (On maidens about 5-in (12cm)). Point probe straight into the abdomen at an angle defined by the shape of the abdomen.

Please Note: This product is not for use on cattle.

With practice it's very accurate

I use this on my sheep. The skin must be clean and a non-wooled area works best. I use this on ewes and find I can be pretty accurate at about 45 days on about 90% of those tested in a standing position. It will not work on ewes that are so far along they are showing external signs of pregnancy. There has to be space in the uterus for fluid. It's the fluid that the probe "sees" not the fetus. You can good strong positive on a ram by pointed at the bladder! It takes practice and its a good idea to try it on non-bred ewes to start with to get an idea how to properly place the probe and good skin contact. The scanning movement across the uterus needs to be slow and accurate and is actually a very small rocking motion of the probe. If at 60 days on a ewe expected to be bred if I still come up neg I will try the other side. It also helps to hold your non-testing hand on the last rib on the other side to give your self a reliable target to point the prob at. Be patient. Learning how to do this right makes it fast and very worth while.

not so happy

We received the preg-tone in good time and shape. We then went out to preg test some ewes fairly far along in gestation. Some were bagged up some not and we could get very few to test pregnant even when they were obviously bagged. Now maybe they were too far along with multiples for the machine to work so we will try again on a group of later bred ewes to see if it works better. Part of the problem is we had trouble getting a good contact sound even with a generous amount of oil.

30 days, 100% my rear

Just purchased this item and I have sows that have passed over on their heat cycle which is 21 days. Yet the Preg-Tone is unable to pick up anything and some of them it's just day 30 and some of them i'm looking at day 45. Currectly VERY VERY unimpressed with this product. My dad had purchased one 30 years ago so we got our use out of it i figured with modern technology comparing a new one to one purchased 30 years ago would be like night and day. Well it is alright should've just stuck with the old one. QC, really free $2 pair of gloves guy spends $425 on a product least you could do would be send the lubrication for the detector.

Love it!!! Easy to use.

This unit is worth the extra price. It is built with quality. The detection surface is small and easy to manipulate at the proper angle. The cord provided was ample. It turns on and off with a toggle switch giving a reliable signal. Rechargeable battery has no added battery cost.
