County fairs can be challenging environments for show livestock because of the potential for high temperatures and stressors associated with unfamiliar surroundings and increased activity.

Here are some tips to help keep your livestock cool and comfortable during their time at the county fair.

Provide Ample Shade

Ensure there is plenty of shade available for your animals and yourself (& others) throughout the fairgrounds. Some options are portable shade structures, tents, or natural shade from trees and buildings.

Ventilation

Maximize airflow within the barns and exhibit areas to help dissipate heat and reduce humidity. Use fans or other ventilation systems to circulate air and create a comfortable environment for your animals.

Access to Water

Make sure your livestock have continuous access to clean, fresh water. Provide water troughs or automatic waterers in multiple locations within the exhibit area to encourage hydration.

Cooling Systems

During livestock shows, where animals are judged based on appearance, health, and behavior, cooling systems play a vital role in ensuring animals look their best. Maintaining proper body temperature helps preserve coat quality, prevents excessive sweating, and keeps animals alert and active during shows, enhancing their chances of success. Consider installing temporary cooling systems such as misting fans or portable evaporative coolers to help lower the ambient temperature and provide relief from the heat.

Cooling Baths

Offer occasional cooling baths to wet down the animals, especially during the hottest parts of the day. This can help lower their body temperature and provide temporary relief from heat stress.

Schedule Activities Wisely

If possible, plan livestock-related activities such as showing, grooming, and exercising when temperatures are naturally lower, such as early morning or late afternoon, to minimize heat exposure.

Limit Stressors

Minimize stressors for your animals by maintaining a consistent routine, avoiding overcrowding, and keeping noise levels low. Stress can exacerbate the effects of heat stress, so creating a calm and predictable environment is essential.

Monitor Health

Keep a close eye on the health and behavior of your animals throughout the fair. Watch for signs of heat stress, such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy, and take immediate action if any issues arise.

Provide Proper Bedding

Use appropriate bedding materials that allow for good airflow and help absorb moisture, like straw or wood shavings. Avoid materials that can retain heat or become damp and uncomfortable for the animals.
