Spring Start-Up Procedure for Evaporative Cooling System
Spring is right around the corner, which means it's time for spring cleaning! From your kitchen to your farm, proper cleaning and maintenance is important, especially as the seasons change. Now is the time to make sure everything is in proper working order before the temperatures start to really rise!
One of those systems you should clean and run pre-season maintenance on is your Evaporative Cooling System on your barns. Don't wait for high heat to find out something isn't working correctly after a long winter.
Perform a test run before the system is needed.
-
Inspection: Begin by inspecting the entire system, including
- Fans bearings & belts
- Pads for damage from weather or rodents
- Run sump pumps in a controlled manner to check for leaks & discharge any anti-freeze
- Controllers & controls for any signs of damage or wear incurred during winterization or while idle
-
Flush: Open valves to clear foreign material that may plug the spraybar, as well as any antifreeze that may be in the system, properly capturing & disposing of the waste
-
Cleaning: Thoroughly clean all components, removing any dust, debris, or mineral buildup that may have accumulated over the winter months. Pay particular attention to the evaporative cooling pads & spraybars, ensuring they are free from blockages
-
Water Source Check: Verify the water source for the system, ensuring it is clean & free from contaminants. Clean or replace filters as necessary and check for leaks in the water supply lines
-
Pump Testing: Test the operation of the water pumps to ensure they are functioning correctly. Check for proper water flow through the pads and adjust pump settings as needed to achieve optimal saturation
-
Fan Inspection: Inspect the fan blades, bearings, tensioners, belts, & motors for any damage or wear. Lubricate bearings as necessary and test fan operation to ensure they are providing adequate airflow throughout the poultry house
-
Control System Check: Test the operation of the control system, including thermostats, timers & sensors. Calibrate as needed to maintain the desired temperature and humidity levels within the house
-
Doors or Curtains: Make sure all tunnel doors, cutains or louvers are opening properly to allow the humidified air to enter the building
-
Start-Up: Gradually start up the evaporative cooling system, allowing time for the pads to become fully saturated and the fans to reach full speed. Monitor system performance closely, adjusting settings as needed to achieve optimal cooling efficiency
-
Monitoring: Continuously monitor the system throughout the spring season, making any necessary adjustments to maintain optimal performance & ensure the comfort and well-being of the poultry
-
Documentation: Keep detailed records of maintenance activities, inspections & any adjustments made to the system during the start-up process. This documentation will be valuable for future reference and troubleshooting
