Make sure your evaporative cooling system is ready as the temperatures climb by taking the following steps. Here at QC Supply, we have all the parts you need to get your system up and running for summer, plus the know-how to get you through any repairs along the way.

By taking the following steps with your evaporative cooling system, you will be ready before the temperatures hit summer levels

  • If the system was winterized Return the pump & connect fittings, replace any filter covers or other parts removed for winterization, ensure the main water supply is on & working properly, and check the float is working properly (adjust if needed by loosening the wing nut)
  • Clean the pads Use a soft bristle brush to dislodge any scale or mineral build-up on pads, follow up with a low-pressure water hose & nozzle to remove any remaining build-up, be careful not to damage pads while cleaning, and if build-up remains, use a manufacturer-approved cleaning agent once the system is fully operational
  • Clean the in-line filter Close the ball valve between the filter & reservoir, unscrew the filter & dump out any water, replace the filter, and open the ball valve
  • If possible, turn off fans. If this is not possible, run fans at a minimum level
  • Flush reservoir Close the ball valve between the pump & 1” diameter exhaust, open the 1” diameter exhaust valve, and turn on the pump. Note: Fresh water will be added to the reservoir by fill line as the system flushes
  • After flushing the reservoir Turn off the pump, open the ball valve between the exhaust & union fitting, and close the exhaust valve
  • Flush header Open the ball valve at the end of the header, turn on the pump & flush for several minutes
  • Disconnect the union at the end of the header
  • Clean header pipe Insert the brush into the header & brush out debris from the header line
  • Reconnect union
  • After flushing the header Turn off the pump & close the ball valve at the end of the header
  • Refill reservoir to full level
  • Resume normal operation
  • Check the system for any restrictions or leaks. Ensure the pads are all wetting uniformly & there are no dry spots

Other steps will need to be taken to get your system up and running for the summer. You will need to make sure you've looked over your pads, filters, pumps, and more.

  • Evaporative Cooling Pads Blow the pads dry & make sure they're clean by giving them a good rinse. Clean pads are efficient pads! If they are damaged, you will need to replace them
  • Pumps, Floats & Tanks Clean pumps, and screens & make sure floats are in place. Filters & screens are key locations for build-up, which will reduce the effectiveness & efficiency of your system
  • Water Supply Ensure your fill levels are correct & you have adequate water. Pads need to be saturated to work correctly - make sure there are no dry streaks, spots, or areas
  • Other areas of concern are covered in our blog, Evaporative Cooling Season on the Farm
